Episode 26 – A Critical Look at Over My Dead Body with Colin Levy

This week Timothy and Alrik are once again joined by Colin Levy to have a gloves off conversation about Over My Dead Body. Colin does most of the talking and really pinpoints exactly how and why the short doesn’t work.

If Over My Dead Body had been a better short (overall) would we have seen more views online?

  • We dig right into OMDB, Timothy outlines how he feels about it and Alrik outlines his thoughts.
  • Colin talks about what worked for him and sets up what was missing.
  • Colin talks about making things clear for the audience and outlines some beats that don’t work for him.
  • We talk about the importance of having intention with every decision and that often times clarity with the emotions that the actors are displaying is the most important factor.
  • Lastly we talk about given lack of time, lack of budget and lack of resources, is it better to make a flawed film than no film at all?

Shameless Plugs/Things to Share

We don’t mention it in the show but Timothy and I are both going to be at a local christmas party for the group Actors/Filmmakers group Coffee and Catchup on Tuesday December 1st. If you are in the area you should come out, have some egg nog and say hello, it should be a fun event!

  • This was a really fun episode for me. Maybe since I was just the producer on OMDB it was easier for me to listen to Colin’s critique, I’m not sure what it would be like if I had directed it, but I really enjoyed hearing his point of view and about what didn’t work for him. Did you find this critical look at the short helpful? What take aways did you get from the discussion?

    • After we recorded this episode I felt energized and ready to conquer the world. Now that a week has passed, I’m feeling more of that “I’m not good enough” feeling. And, a lot of “will I ever be good at making movies?” But you know me, I wont give up. Soon enough I’ll delude myself into trying again.

  • I think this may have been your best episode. I just rewatched it after listening to the podcast and I agree with a lot of Colin’s points. It was shot and directed wonderfully. I would have liked to see the female character come off as really bad at dating and eager to meet her date. One she meets him, she is reluctant, and eventually realizes he’s a good guy. I did find it funnier the second time around. I think I was confused a bit on the first go round. Anyway thanks for putting yourselves out there. I found it very helpful.

    • Thanks so much for taking the time to write this! It’s good to know you were confused on your first viewing. I needed to hear that.

Colin was really insightful and I’m excited to put these learnings towards my next project. I’m glad it was helpful to you, too.
